1. Introduction
----------------

The backward region of H1 ,mother volume 'BEMC', consists of three different
subdetectors:

* the backward proportional chambers                  ('DBPC' -140.55 < z < -150.00 cm )
* the backward electromagnetic and hadronic SPACAL    ('BCA1'  and 'BCA2')
* the backward time of flight walls VLQ               ('S1A3' into 'BCA1' and
                                                       'S2A3' into 'BCA2')

5. BPC in details
------------------

The Backward Proportional Chamber  BPC  is  mounted  on the electromagnetic
SPAgetti CALorimeter (SPACAL) in the mother volume  'BEMC'. It consists
of 6 wire upper coordinate planes and of 6 wire down coordinate planes
Y(Y1,Y2),U(U1,U2),V(V1,V2) at 0, +60 and -60 grad. Wire plane consists
of 296 long + 37 short wires for Y planes  and 494 wires for U and V planes,
with a spacing of 2.5 mm.

Relevant for the BPC are the text banks  'DGDM'  and  'DGAM'  described
here.
